Alaska Cruise – Day 1 – Seattle

“It has been some time since my last entry, and thus I must ask forgiveness for my dereliction; my travels with the Master have, for the past three weeks, been quite extensive, and I have been much distracted. But I mean to correct that, beginning here. Herr Gruber believes this experience will allow me to become a more well-rounded being, and thus far I have been given every reason to believe him, I have seen magnificent things, which I will, to the best powers of description, attempt to put into words.”

And so begins Chapter 2 of The Clockwork Man by William Jablosky, the piece of Steampunk fiction I took with me on our Third Day Alaskan Cruise. I thought it more than adequately starts this post as my travel with the Master have  been extensive and I will resort to photos, for the most part, to share this amazing experience.

Seattle is a fantabulous place to visit, even if you’re not going on a cruise. There are so many sites to see, the food is incredible and the people are some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered.

Third Day 20th Anniversary Cake Part 3

Several folks had asked for close up shots  and pics of us making this cake via Facebook and Twitter so that’s why I’m taking the time to journal the making of said cake with more detail than I usually would. It was an especially fun cake to do so I don’t mind a bit. Having several family members contribute to the creation of this edible work of art makes the memory worth keeping so I’m happy to “scrapbook” this here. I have a lot of pics so I’m not going to try to put it all in one post – you have stuff to do and other blogs to read.

If you missed it, visit Part 1 and Part 2 then you’ll be caught up to speed.

First of all, we had to make Cake Pops for some Gomers who have heard about them and have seen our photos of them. We also like to take some for Lott, the tour manager, as he seems to like them quite a bit. If he’s just faking it for our  sake, he’s doing a good job. We’ve learned that the band doesn’t usually get the treats folks bring them (bummer since that’s one of our “love languages!”) but Lott acts like he’s going to steal them when we bring them. SO, we gave him his own and the band got stuck with cake.

FINISHING THE CAKE BEFORE TRANSPORTING

I forgot to include the cake board when I started this. One of our signature elements: folks get a kick out of serving out cake to discover a message or picture hiding beneath. I was hoping to use the Come Together symbol with a photo but ran into technical difficulties and didn’t have time to make it happen.

Back to the drum: Before I took a good look at what instruments we’d be putting on the cake, I purchased Opalescent spray for that “sparkly drum” look. THEN, I asked for help from Gomers for good pics and did my homework. The realization that David Carr’s Craviotto Drums are wood grain left me wondering what the heck I was going to make sparkly cuz I was bound and determined to use my spray paint! Darn.

I went to work on the last of the hardware attaching pieces with Piping Gel. Jillian and the small fries had already made the smaller pieces so it was a “simple” matter of assembly and painting. Cakes can be so….stupid. Sometimes,  I swear they’re living, breathing, evil creatures just waiting for us humans to try to shape them into something fabulous but they decide to be “in control” and rebel against their maker!!! Okay, I’ll calm down. Enough of that…stupid cake.

I made a couple of shades of vodka paint with brown icing color for the wood grain. Icing color tends to deepen or darken as it dries so I kept working with the colors trying to get them to match David’s drums expecting the paint to act like icing. It doesn’t work the same, I found. I made a vodka paint with luster dust  and used that Opalescent spray for the hardware. I tried the sliver metallic spray and was not happy with the results. I’ve used the gold before and that looks great but the silver looked blue.  Luster dust for silver. Write that down.

This was where we stopped on the cake on Wednesday, May 16. We loaded the layers in a Cambro carrier with he exception of the 14″ bottom layer which didn’t fit so it was placed on top of the carrier. Each layer was placed on a piece of foam covered with a “grip mat” and the cakes survived the trip with minimal damage. Some pieces slid out of place but I was thrilled that we drove a cake from Indiana to North Carolina and they made it! Our first long-distance delivery. Yay!

Thanks for taking a gander!

Third Day 20th Anniversary Cake – Part 2

Visit HERE for Part 1.

So…our kitchen took me back to the days when my walls were plastered with posters of my favorite bands.

Work commences on the “Revelation PRS”:

Cakes like this really trash the kitchen. Just sayin’.
For the wood grain on the Fender bass head, I made a “vodka paint.” No worries, folks; it evaporates completely and leaves no flavor.  In fact, it evaporates so fast, it kept drying out in my bowl. For the metallic hardware, we started with the edible spray paint but was not satisfied with the results so we made paint out of vodka and luster dust.
Alrighty – that’s all I have time for. I just wanted to try and get some more in while I had a breather.
Have a great week!

Gorgeous Wall Treatment

This is the first time I’ve been so impressed with an idea on Pinterest that I had

to post it. Inspired by artwork made with metal, you can use a canvas, apply

stickers, decals, etc., and spray paint. Remove decals; hang white or colored

lights behind it….this is wicked awesome! This would be so incredible to do in a

cafe! While these look very elegant, I’m seeing the possibilities with whimsical

themes or even a “rock & roll” feel. Very cool. Don’t stop here – go to the

website to see the other examples and how-to suggestions in the comments on

the site. Enjoy!

Third Day 20th Anniversary Cake – Part 1

I tend to be quick about volunteering to make cakes for special events. I’m always worried that I will show up at a gathering and, because the person in charge of cake didn’t know any better than to get a grocery store cake, we celebrate with one of those cakes with “toothpaste icing” and plastic balloons stuck in it . One of my love languages is a combination of gifts and acts of service; if you give a gift, the time spent on the gift wrap says, “You are special.” Likewise, if you present a cake, the cake should tell the person they are worth the trouble of a special cake. When the occasion is to say thank you, congratulations, break a leg, or happy birthday, I’m sorry, but  a premade cake from Wally-world is wholly inadequate for saying “you are special and you are loved.”

I get my kicks making cakes and if it’s a special occasion, it’s an occasion to make an exceptional cake.  Moreover, if I’m able to create a custom-designed cake, I know it will help with making the occasion more memorable. What is it about a cake that says, “This is officially a party?”  When I posted about The Suessical the Musical Cake, I touched on how folks love it when they see a bit of themselves in the cake.

SO, when the Third Day Psycho Fans known as Gomers posted earlier this year that we would be taking a party to Raleigh, NC to celebrate the band’s 20 years, I jumped on the opportunity to make a special cake. A vision for the cake developed almost immediately; I knew the titles of all of their songs would make their appearance around the bottom layer of the cake. In order for the band to see a bit of themselves in the cake, it was a matter of getting their instruments on the cake. I saw one layer transformed into a drum then a bass head and neck wrapped around a layer and the same for a guitar around another.

Later, I pictured fondant details including a 20 on top and, of course, the band’s name.

When I signed on to do the cake, it was without thinking it through very much. Transporting a cake can be nerve-wracking when’s just 15 minutes away! I knew we could do it but knew I’d need to do my homework on transporting. A lot depends on the weather, too. Icing and fondant can be pretty unpredictable anyways but factor in heat and humidity (or rain!) and things can get uglay.

We started making the fondant pieces to placed onsite first almost a week before our trip.  I wanted to start earlier but we were swamped with catering, I had been busy working on the digital scrapbook for this shindig, and I got sick.  SO, we had to really kick it in gear. We made made extras…just in case. I made the first batch but they were too thin. Jillian has a knack for the fondant so she and Autumn (8 y.o.) attacked the notes, etc. and I got busy on the cakes.

Autumn is a natural with cake decorating. She’s been decorating cakes since she was 5 and really has a flair for the fondant!

(Please note, everyone’s hands were very clean. You cannot wear food handler gloves to work with fondant. It’s physically impossible. Trust me.)

The bottom layer was our yummy Sour Cream White. I decided it needed marbled with “Consuming Fire” flames. The other layers were Chocolatetown  Special and I just had to use Orange in honor of all the Gomer love.

This looked pretty cool sliced but, unfortunately, most folks ate what was served first from the upper layers , which, really isn’t unfortunate because they were yummy, too. They just didn’t look as cool.

10 y.o. Judah and 6 y.o. Isabelle helped with the drum hardware.

Time for school break. A lot of folks talk about “balance” in their lives with home, school, play and work. We’ve learned that it’s necessary to “blend.”  We play, work and school in the kitchen.  We also boogie, play “Ninja”, play percussion on the pot rack and other nonsense so drive slow when you go by – you never know what entertainment you may be missing.

Isabelle will now demonstrate how to make “wood grain” out of fondant:

1. Take 2 or 3 shades of brown fondant (or add yellow or white), roll into “snakes” of equal length (remember those playdough days), twist.

Coil the twist.

Roll it out while reshaping it to the size you need.

It’s the beginning a guitar neck! It also looks a lot like bacon. A little more rolling is in order….

Very important – use scraps for creative development.

And the bacon is attached with first round of frets applied. One string is in place. No, the string is not edible. We decided on metallic thread and just removed it before serving. We explored all options on edible guitar strings; they either would not have survived the trip, would have taken too long on site to attach, or looked stupid. I found thread that looked realistic enough and it survived the trip. A couple went crooked, but I did not have to reattach them.

Well, I’ve been working on this post for two or three weeks and, since this cake had so many parts and so many pictures, I think it’s about time I just post it and do this in more “bite-size” portions (see what I did there?).

Let them eat cake!

Something had to give

Got saw fit to add a couple of plates to the collection I was already spinning so rather than watch them all come crashing down, I had to take a few down so I could keep all of my plates spinning. One thing that had to go was this blog. I’ve posted more than once about how I want to get busy writing again but business and/or tiredness kept pushing the writing aside. Just when I thought I was back in the groove, I committed to something else. At least this time, it was a conscious decision to set the blog aside while I focus on the project at hand rather than plain ol’ procrastination. That mission was accomplished so I’m back trying to pick up where I left off but it’s been awhile! Other things that had to go: laundry staying caught up, planned menus, and sleep. I was drinking coffee to stay up late and so it would wake me up in the early a.m. So, trying to kick it back in gear is like starting from scratch. For now, I’ll just share what I’ve been up to that’s been so time-consuming in addition to being hit hard with some freak health condition that left me laid up. Our working theory is that some new meds triggered gout or arthritis or  whatever-itis. I’m still going through tests so we’re not sure what’s going on. But what satan meant for evil, God used for good. Just when I was down to a deadline, I had no choice but to sit and git r dun – it hurt to move! Heck, it hurt my finger to click my mouse! (And, I confess, I have been quite the whiner). Point being, I needed to focus on the task at hand and the many hats I wear that often distract me were held at bay.

The project I needed to complete was a 100 page scrapbook with entries from about 50 folks from all over the country and one or two from Brazil. It was a privilege to be able to compile this:

It took three months to complete but it was a whole heck of a lot of fun, too! Using CD covers for backgrounds with the Gomer “trademark” orange making its appearance throughout gave plenty of inspiration. If you’d like to peruse the pages, you can check out this link.

You’ll have to register and log in to see the scrapbook. If you’re reading this and you don’t know what the scrapbooks were for, you don’t know me very well or you’ve been hiding under a rock. The scrapbooks were for this.

I’ll post about the adventure we had as soon as I’m able. Besides catch-up on my blog, I’m catching up on laundry, businessy stuff (bills, quotes, marketing, website, etc.), housecleaning, etc. Thanks for checking to see if I’m still breathing in the blogosphere. I hope to be back soon! What’s not shared is lost, Michelle

Mac Powell & Matt Maher: God Of Wonders + Step By Step

It’s Music Monday! And all I have time to do on Mondays as far as blogging is post a video so Music Monday is perfect for me! I haven’t been posting any day recently due to a project I’m working on but, for my sanity, I will be back on soon (whether you need me posting or not is irrelevant).

In anticipation of the upcoming Third Day Gomer Gathering in Raleigh, NC Jillian, Natalie and I will be travelling to, I am compelled to post nothing but Third Day from here til then (and possibly July when Craig and I will be on the Third Day Alaskan Cruise…then I’ll be posting videos from the cruise – there’s not getting away from it!)

My brother/Gomer in Christ does an outstanding job recording concerts – I highly recommend you subscribe to 3rdDayRocker (he does more than just Third Day – check him out)!

AND, because we’re on the heels of Empty Tomb Day (and, wouldn’t you know it, the tomb is empty today, too?) praise is appropriate. Praise is always appropriate…just sayin’.

Without further adieu,

This day in 1988

It’s not just Lenae Michelle’s 24th birthday, it’s the 24th anniversary of our lives being turned upside down. Just like anyone else who becomes a parent, everything changed overnight. Literally. She was born just after midnight (12:22 to be exact). From March 29, 1988 on, things that didn’t matter that much before took on a whole new meaning. Politics mattered, who was on the school board was of most importance, nutrition, child training, making a home, being a better person, the list goes on. Most importantly, things eternal trump all things because of the life-changing event of becoming a parent. Thank you, Lenae, for being the catalyst for all the changes that matter. Yes, I know this was God’s idea – I thank and praise Him first and foremost for each and every life-change known as a baby He has given us. I love being a mom.

I was told throughout high school that “these are the best days of your life.”

1. Thank God that’s not true because my teen years were tumultuous at best. (I often wondered, “If these are the best days then what is there to look forward to?”)

2. The years I’m in right now are the best days of my life. They lied. “They” just wanted to sell lots of memory books, yearbooks, and class rings.

I am the mom of toddlers, youngers, middlers, olders, and young adults. It’s a new season having young adults and I’m still a little nervous as a mom as how to “mom” at this stage but it is such a privilege to see all the years we’ve muddled through together come to fruition. Lenae is a blessing and I am so thankful as I watch God work in her life. I am grateful God placed her in our family.

Happy Birthday Lenae!

Can’t Help Falling in Love with You

It’s Music Monday!

I love the Piano Guys. I love Elvis. I love this.

Enjoy the goosebumps!

The Last Supper- “Will you marry me?”

I’m trying to establish routine so I’ll post more often. I know myself and if I have  a “system” for something, I’m able to work it. I figure Sunday is a good day for “Eye Drops & Q-Tips” – “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.” Matt. 13:15-16

I know God has spoken into my life, but He has spoken into so many others that have blessed me, convicted me, taught me and challenged me. So I am compelled to share what they have to say once in awhile.

So I give you the anointed Mike Donehey of Tenth Avenue North. The first time I saw TAN in concert,  I was blown away by the teaching of  this amazing Jesus Freak and his passion for the Word and for others. Be blessed!
